What is the standard grading scale?

The grading scale used by many US schools is the 10-point scale: A is 90–100%, B is 80–89%, C is 70–79%, D is 60–69% and F is below 60%. On a 4.0 GPA scale those are worth 4, 3, 2, 1 and 0 points. Schools that use plus and minus grades split each band, so 87–89% is a B+ (3.3) and 80–82% is a B− (2.7). Your school’s handbook has the official cutoffs.

The 10-point grading scale

Most US schools use a 10-point grading scale: each letter covers 10 percentage points, from A at 90 to D at 60. Some districts use a 7-point scale instead (A 93, B 85, C 77, D 70), which makes every letter harder to reach. A 92% is an A on the 10-point scale but a B on the 7-point scale.

Converting a percentage to GPA

To turn a percentage into GPA points, find its letter grade first, then the points for that letter: this is how most US high schools and colleges do it. Some websites divide the percentage by 25 instead (85% ÷ 25 = 3.4), but that is not how US schools award GPA points; with the letter method an 85% is a B, worth 3.0. If a college or credential evaluator gives you its own conversion table, use theirs. For a 4 point grading scale calculator that averages a whole semester, use the GPA calculator.

What letter grade does my percentage represent?

Compare your exact percentage with the minimum for each letter on your school’s scale. A score of 90% is an A on the example 90/80/70/60 scale, but another school may use different boundaries. Display rounding alone does not change the letter grade.

A percentage does not define a universal letter grade

Your percentage is earned marks divided by available marks, multiplied by 100. A letter grade then depends on school-defined boundaries. The same 89.6% can map to different letters under different policies.

Why rounding matters at a boundary

Our tools assign letters before rounding the displayed percentage. An exact 89.6% is below a 90% A threshold even when displayed as 90% to zero decimal places. If your school rounds first, apply that policy separately or adjust the boundary intentionally.

GPA grading system in the USA

Most US high schools and colleges use a 4 point grading system: each course letter grade has grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0), and GPA is the average of those points, weighted by credits. A percentage describes one assessment or course; GPA combines courses. Schools set their own cutoffs, so use your institution’s grade-point table when it gives one.

High school vs. college grading scale

High schools and colleges usually use the same A–F letters and 4.0 GPA points. The differences are in the details: many colleges use plus and minus grades (B+ 3.3, B− 2.7) and some do not give an A+, while many high schools add weight for honors and AP classes, so a high school GPA can go above 4.0. College passing grades can also differ by course: a D may pass a class but not count toward a major.

Other grading scales you may see

  • Pass/fail: no letter, so the class does not change your GPA.
  • E instead of F: some schools use E for a failing grade.
  • Standards-based grading: 4, 3, 2 and 1 show how well a skill is mastered, not a percentage.
  • ECTS (Europe): A to E are passing grades and F is a fail, based on how a student ranks in the class.
  • UK degree classes: First (70% and up), Upper second 2:1 (60–69%), Lower second 2:2 (50–59%) and Third (40–49%).

Weighted and unweighted grades

A weighted course average uses assignment-category weights. A weighted high school GPA instead adds a course-difficulty bonus. These are separate concepts; a category worth 30% does not mean a GPA bonus of 0.3.

Check these rules in your handbook

  • Letter-grade thresholds and plus/minus grades.
  • Rounding before or after assigning a letter.
  • Pass/fail and withdrawal treatment.
  • Repeated-course replacement policies.
  • Honors and AP/IB weighting rules.

ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS

Grading scale: percentage to letter grade chart FAQs

What is a grading scale?+

A grading scale is the set of cutoffs a school uses to turn a percentage into a letter grade. On the standard US scale, A is 90–100%, B 80–89%, C 70–79%, D 60–69% and F below 60%.

What is the 10-point grading scale?+

It is the standard US scale where each letter covers 10 points: A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69 and F below 60.

Is a D a passing grade?+

Usually yes. On the standard scale a D (60–69%) passes, but some courses, programs and colleges require a C or better to count the class.

What percentage is an A?+

On the standard 10-point scale an A is 90% to 100%. On the plus/minus scale a plain A starts at 93%, with 90%–92.99% as an A−. On a 7-point scale an A also starts at 93%.

What percentage is a C+?+

On the common plus/minus scale a C+ is 77% to 79.99%, worth 2.3 GPA points on a 4.0 scale. Below 77% is a C, and 80% starts a B−. On the 7-point scale, 77% is the lowest C.

What letter grade is a 75?+

A 75% is a C on the standard and plus/minus scales, and a D on the 7-point scale, where a C starts at 77%.

What grade is a 70?+

A 70% is a C on the standard scale, a C− on the plus/minus scale, and a D on the 7-point scale.

What grade is an 85?+

An 85% is a B on all three common scales: the standard 10-point, plus/minus (83%–86.99%) and 7-point (85%–92%) scales.

What percentage is a B+?+

On the common plus/minus scale a B+ is 87% to 89.99%. It is worth 3.3 GPA points on a 4.0 scale.

Is an 89.5% an A?+

Only if your school rounds up before assigning letters. Using the exact percentage, 89.5% is a B on the standard scale and a B+ on the plus/minus scale.

What GPA is a B?+

A B is worth 3.0 points on a 4.0 scale. A B+ is 3.3 and a B− is 2.7.

What is a 60 in grades?+

A 60% is a D on the standard scale, a D− on the plus/minus scale, and an F on the 7-point scale, where a D starts at 70%.

How do I convert a percentage to GPA?+

Find the letter grade for the percentage, then use that letter’s points: 93% or more is an A (4.0), 90–92% an A− (3.7), 87–89% a B+ (3.3), 83–86% a B (3.0), and so on down to F (0) below 60%. Average the points across your classes, weighted by credits, to get your GPA.

What letter grade is a 3.3 GPA?+

A 3.3 GPA is a B+ on the 4.0 scale. A B+ is usually 87–89%, so a 3.3 GPA means your classes average a high B. If it is your overall GPA, you may have a mix of A’s and B’s, such as one A and two B’s worth 3.33. A B is 3.0 and an A− is 3.7.

What GPA is a B−?+

A B− is worth 2.7 GPA points on the 4.0 scale. On the common plus and minus scale it covers 80–82%, just above a C+ (77–79%, 2.3 points) and below a plain B (83–86%, 3.0 points). Some schools that do not use minus grades count any 80–89% as a B worth 3.0.

What is a 3.0 GPA in letter grade?+

A 3.0 GPA is a B average. On the 4.0 scale a B is worth exactly 3.0 points and usually means 83–86% with plus and minus grades, or 80–89% on the standard 10-point scale. A 3.0 is a common minimum for honors programs and many scholarships, so check the exact cutoff you need.

What is a B+ GPA?+

A B+ is worth 3.3 GPA points on the 4.0 scale. It usually means 87–89%. Two classes with a B+ and one with an A average (3.3 + 3.3 + 4.0) ÷ 3 = 3.53. Schools without plus grades count a B+ as a plain B, worth 3.0.

What GPA is an A− average?+

An A− average is a 3.7 GPA on the 4.0 scale. An A− usually covers 90–92%. If all your grades are A’s and A−’s, your GPA falls between 3.7 and 4.0; for example, two A’s and two A−’s give (4.0 + 4.0 + 3.7 + 3.7) ÷ 4 = 3.85.

What GPA is a C?+

A C is worth 2.0 GPA points on the 4.0 scale. With plus and minus grades, a C+ is 2.3 and a C− is 1.7. A 2.0 GPA is often the minimum to stay in good academic standing at college, so a C average is passing but leaves little room. A C is 73–76% with plus and minus grades.

What percentage is a C?+

On the standard scale a C is 70–79%. With plus and minus grades, a C+ is 77–79%, a C is 73–76% and a C− is 70–72%. A C is worth 2.0 GPA points, a C+ 2.3 and a C− 1.7. On a 7-point scale a C starts higher, at 77%, so check which scale your school uses.

What percentage is a C−?+

A C− is usually 70–72%, worth 1.7 GPA points. It is the lowest C on the plus and minus scale: 69% is a D+ and 73% is a plain C. On a 7-point scale, where a C starts at 77%, a 70–72% is a D instead, so the same score can be a different letter at another school.

What percentage is a B−?+

A B− is 80–82% on the plus and minus scale, worth 2.7 GPA points. On a scale without plus and minus, 80–82% is a B.

What percentage is a D+?+

A D+ is 67–69%, worth 1.3 GPA points. It is a passing grade at most schools, but below the C many programs require.

What percentage is an A−?+

An A− is 90–92%, worth 3.7 GPA points. 93% and above is a full A (4.0).

What percentage is a B?+

A B is 80–89% on the standard scale. With plus and minus grades, a plain B is 83–86% (3.0), a B− 80–82% and a B+ 87–89%.
