Weighted grade calculator

A grade calculator with weights for homework, quizzes and exams. Add each category and its weight to see your current weighted grade and what you need on the rest.

A weighted grade multiplies each category’s average by its weight, so bigger categories count more.

Grade % = Σ(category % × weight) ÷ Σ weights

What is my current grade in this class?

Enter the scores and course weights of completed categories, such as homework, quizzes and exams. Your current average is normalized over completed work. The tool also shows course points already earned and the average needed on the remaining weight, so an unfinished course is not mistaken for a failing grade.

Grade weight calculator: how weighted course grades work

This weighted grades calculator lets you calculate your grade with weights straight from your syllabus. Multiply each category’s percentage score by its course weight. Add the contributions, then divide by the total completed weight to find the average on completed work. Homework worth 20% contributes less than an exam worth 50%.

Weighted average calculator for grades: the formulas

Current average = Σ(Score × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight)

Required remaining average = (Target − Earned course points) ÷ Remaining weight × 100

Grading calculator with weights: a homework and quizzes example

Homework at 90% with 20% weight earns 18 course points. Quizzes at 80% with 30% weight earn 24 points. Your completed-work average is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. With half the course left, a 90% overall target requires a 96% average on the remaining work.

Do not give ungraded work a zero by accident

Leave future categories out to estimate the current average. A genuine zero for completed work should be included. Weights cannot total more than 100%. When they reach 100%, there is no remaining weight for a target projection.

When to use a points-based grade instead

Some courses add all earned points and divide by all possible points. That method weights assignments by their point totals, without separate category percentages. Choose the points grade calculator for that syllabus.

Key terms explained

Category weight
A category’s contribution to the complete course.
Normalized average
An average over only the weights currently included.
Remaining weight
100% minus the total completed category weight.

ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS

Weighted grade calculator FAQs

Do weights have to total 100%?+

Completed categories can total less than 100%. The tool normalizes their average and treats the rest as remaining course weight. A completed course should total 100%.

Can I average the category percentages directly?+

Only when categories have equal weights. Otherwise a simple arithmetic average gives the wrong result.

Can I calculate a weighted semester grade?+

Yes, when your school expresses components as percentages of one final grade. Enter each component’s grade and its syllabus weight.

Does this drop my lowest quiz?+

No. Calculate the adjusted quiz-category average under your course policy first, then enter that percentage and its category weight.

How do you calculate weighted grades?+

Multiply each category score by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total weight used. With homework at 90% worth 20% and quizzes at 80% worth 30%: (90 × 20 + 80 × 30) ÷ 50 = 84%.

What are weighted grades?+

Weighted grades count some categories more than others. A test category worth 40% moves your course grade four times as much as a homework category worth 10%, even when both have the same score.

How do I find the grade I need on the remaining work?+

Subtract the points you have already banked from your target, then divide by the weight still to come. In the example above, you have banked 42 points over 50% of the course, so a 90% target needs (90 − 42) ÷ 50 × 100 = 96% on the rest.

Does Canvas weight grades?+

Only if your teacher turns on weighting by assignment group. If your Canvas grades page lists a weight for each group, enter each group here as a category with that weight.

How do I calculate weighted grades in Excel?+

Put scores in one column and weights in the next, then use =SUMPRODUCT(scores, weights) / SUM(weights). It returns the same average on completed work as this calculator.
