Middle school GPA calculator
Enter the letter grade for each class on your report card and this middle school GPA calculator gives your GPA on the standard 4.0 scale. Most middle schools don’t use credits, so every class counts the same unless you change it. Use it for 6th, 7th or 8th grade, or for your whole junior high record.
Middle school GPA is the average of your class grade points on a 4.0 scale, usually with every class counted once.
GPA = Σ grade points ÷ number of classes

Every class counts 1 credit. Change a class’s credits only if your school weights it, such as 0.5 for a half-year class.

How to calculate your middle school GPA
Turn each letter grade into grade points: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0.0.
Add the grade points together.
Divide by the number of classes.
If your school gives some classes more credit (for example a full-year class worth 1 and a half-year class worth 0.5), multiply each class’s points by its credits first, then divide by the total credits.
02 / Calculation method
Middle school GPA formula
GPA = (grade points of every class) ÷ (number of classes)
22.0 grade points ÷ 6 classes = 3.67 GPA. These are the calculator’s starting classes, so the result above matches.

Check your school’s scale
Your school’s percentages for each letter may differ. Check your student handbook. The grading scales chart shows the common US scales side by side.

Combine 6th, 7th and 8th grade
To get one GPA for several years, don’t average the yearly GPAs. Add up all the grade points from every year and divide by the total number of classes. For example, 21.0 points from six 6th grade classes and 22.0 points from six 7th grade classes give 43.0 ÷ 12 = 3.58. Averaging the two yearly GPAs (3.50 and 3.67) can give a slightly different answer when the years have different numbers of classes.

Does middle school GPA matter?
Middle school grades usually don’t go on a college application. They can still matter for high school course placement, honors or advanced classes, and some selective high school programs. Ask your school counselor how your school uses them.
Key terms explained
Grade points
The value of a letter grade on the 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.
Unweighted GPA
A GPA where every class uses the same scale, with no bonus for advanced classes.
Credits
How much a class counts. Most middle schools count every class once (1 credit).
ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS
Middle school GPA calculator FAQs
How do you calculate GPA in middle school?+
Convert each class’s letter grade to points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0, with plus and minus grades in between), add the points and divide by the number of classes. Six classes worth 22 points give a 3.67 GPA. If your school uses credits, weight each class by its credits.
What is a good GPA in middle school?+
A 3.0 (a B average) is solid, and 3.5 or higher (mostly A’s and B+’s) is strong. What counts as good depends on your goals and your school. If you’re applying to an honors track or a selective high school program, your school counselor can tell you the cutoff it uses.
What is my GPA with all A’s and one B?+
With six classes, five A’s and one B give (5 × 4.0 + 3.0) ÷ 6 = 3.83. With seven classes it is (6 × 4.0 + 3.0) ÷ 7 = 3.86. The more classes you take, the less one B lowers your GPA.
What is the highest GPA in middle school?+
On an unweighted 4.0 scale the highest GPA is 4.0, which means straight A’s. An A+ usually still counts as 4.0. Some schools that offer high school credit courses in 8th grade weight them, which can push a GPA above 4.0; use the high school GPA calculator for that.
How do I calculate my GPA if my school doesn’t use credits?+
Count every class once. Add the grade points and divide by the number of classes. That is exactly what this calculator does by default, because each class starts at 1 credit.
What if my school uses numbers instead of letters?+
Convert each number to a letter with your school’s scale first, then use the letter. If your school gives percentages, the grading scales chart shows the usual letter for each percentage.
