Grade average calculator
This grade average calculator finds the average of your grades as percentages, points, fractions or letters. Drop the lowest scores, add weights, and see the average needed on the rest.
An average grade is the sum of your grades divided by how many there are. For letters, average their grade points.
Average = Σ grades ÷ number of grades

01 / Calculator guide
What is the average of my grades?
List your grades as percentages, fractions, letters or points. The calculator averages them, can drop your lowest scores, shows the letter, GPA and median, and works out the average you need on grades still to come.
02 / Calculator guide
How do you average your grades?
Write down each grade as a percentage. Turn fractions into percentages first: 18/20 is 90%.
Add the percentages together.
Divide by how many grades you added. 88%, 72%, 94% and 85% add up to 339, and 339 ÷ 4 = 84.75%, a B.
If the grades are worth different points, add the points earned and divide by the points possible instead.

Average grade calculator: two ways to average grades
If every grade counts the same, add the percentages and divide by how many there are. If assignments are worth different numbers of points, add all points earned and divide by all points possible instead. The second method gives a 100-point test more influence than a 10-point quiz, which is how most gradebooks work.
04 / Calculation method
Average grade formulas
Simple average = (Grade₁ + Grade₂ + … + Gradeₙ) ÷ n
Points average = (Total points earned ÷ Total points possible) × 100
05 / Worked example
Example: four grades
Grades of 88%, 72%, 94% and 85% add up to 339. Divided by 4, the average is 84.75%, a B. If your teacher drops the lowest grade, the 72% is removed and the average becomes (88 + 94 + 85) ÷ 3 = 89%.

Averaging fractions and letter grades
Type 18/20 and it counts as 90%. A letter such as B+ counts as the middle of its plus and minus range (88.5%), because a letter alone does not say where in the range the score was. If you know the exact percentages, use them instead: the average will be more accurate.

For teachers: class average and median
Use Paste a list to drop in a column of scores from your gradebook or a spreadsheet. The result shows the class average, the median, and the highest and lowest score. The median is the middle score, so one very low or very high paper moves it less than it moves the average.
09 / Assumptions & limits
Which average does your class use?
A weighted class (for example homework 20%, tests 50%) uses neither method directly: use the weighted grade calculator for that. Extra credit can push a single grade above 100%, which this tool allows up to 150%.
10 / Worked example
Averaging letter grades
Choose Letter grades above to average letters directly. Each letter becomes grade points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, C = 2.0), so A, B+ and C average (4.0 + 3.3 + 2.0) ÷ 3 = 3.10, closest to a B. Turn on Weight by credits when classes have different credits.
Key terms explained
Simple average
The sum of grades divided by how many grades there are.
Points average
Total points earned divided by total points possible.
Drop lowest
A policy that removes your lowest score before averaging.
ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS
Grade average calculator FAQs
How do I calculate my average grade?+
Add all your grades and divide by how many grades you have. If assignments have different point values, divide total points earned by total points possible and multiply by 100.
Does dropping the lowest grade always help?+
With a simple average, removing the lowest score can only keep the average the same or raise it. With points, dropping a small assignment may change the result less than you expect.
How do I average letter grades?+
Type the letters straight into the grade boxes. Each one counts as the middle of its range on the plus and minus scale, so A is 95%, B+ is 88.5% and C− is 71.5%. The result shows the average as a percent, a letter and a GPA. An F has no fixed range, so type its percentage.
What average do I need on my remaining grades?+
Enter your target average and how many grades are still to come (or, in points mode, how many points). The calculator shows the score you need on each one. It assumes the grades you dropped stay dropped.
Can I paste a list of scores?+
Yes. Press Paste a list and paste scores separated by commas, spaces or new lines, such as a column copied from a spreadsheet. They replace the rows above, up to 60 scores.
What letter grade is my average?+
The calculator uses a standard scale: 90% and above is an A, 80% a B, 70% a C and 60% a D. Your school may use plus/minus grades or different cut-offs.
Can I average letter grades without percentages?+
Yes. Choose Letter grades, pick each letter and the calculator averages their 4.0 grade points and shows the closest letter.
