How do advanced classes affect my GPA?
Choose each course’s grade, credits and level to compare the two results. The unweighted GPA uses base grade points; the weighted GPA applies the editable Honors or AP/IB bonus. Use your school’s rules before interpreting the difference as an official GPA.
Weighted GPA calculator: weighted and unweighted together
Choose a letter grade, credits, and course level for each class. The unweighted result uses the displayed 4.0 scale. The weighted result adds the configured Honors or AP/IB bonus to eligible course grade points before multiplying by credits.
How to calculate GPA in high school
Unweighted GPA = Σ(Base grade points × Credits) ÷ Total included credits
Weighted GPA = Σ((Base grade points + Eligible bonus) × Credits) ÷ Total included credits
AP and Honors classes
Use it as an AP GPA calculator: set each AP or IB class to AP / IB and each Honors class to Honors, and the weighted GPA calculator high school students need adds the bonus for you. Because it is a weighted unweighted GPA calculator, both numbers show side by side, so you can compare a GPA calculator with AP classes against the plain 4.0 result. The AP and Honors bonuses are editable, so the result follows your school’s rules.
Example: three equally weighted courses
An A in Honors English earns 4.5 weighted points with a 0.5 bonus. A B in AP Mathematics earns 4.0 with a 1.0 bonus. An A in standard History earns 4.0. Weighted GPA is 12.5 ÷ 3 = 4.167; unweighted GPA is 11 ÷ 3 = 3.667.
HS GPA calculator: default course bonuses
| Course level | Added grade points for passing grades |
|---|---|
| Standard | 0 |
| Honors | 0.5 |
| AP / IB | 1.0 |
| F grade | No bonus |
| P or W | Excluded from GPA |
Schools and admissions offices use different policies
The bonus settings are editable because no universal weighted GPA scale exists. This model uses A+ = 4.0, excludes P and W, and gives F no bonus. It does not automatically replace repeated grades or limit the number of weighted courses. Admissions offices may recalculate GPA using their own rules.
Credits and course difficulty measure different things
Credits determine how much a course contributes. A course-level bonus changes its grade-point value. A two-credit standard course can carry more influence than a one-credit Honors course even though Honors receives a bonus.
GPA calculator with weighted classes: side by side
| Course | Level | Grade | Unweighted | Weighted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English | Regular | A | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| AP Biology | AP | B+ | 3.3 | 4.3 |
| Honors Algebra II | Honors | A− | 3.7 | 4.2 |
| History | Regular | B | 3.0 | 3.0 |
| Spanish | Regular | A | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| GPA (5 classes) | 3.6 | 3.9 |
Honors and AP grade points
| Letter | Regular | Honors (+0.5) | AP or IB (+1.0) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
| B | 3.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 |
| C | 2.0 | 2.5 | 3.0 |
| D | 1.0 | 1.5 | 2.0 |
| F | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
Your school’s own bonus
+0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB are common, but schools set their own rules. Some give no bonus for a D, some cap weighted GPA, and colleges often recalculate it. Change the bonuses in the calculator to match your school.
Middle school GPA
Many middle schools report letter grades without a GPA, and high school GPA usually starts in 9th grade. If your middle school does calculate one, it is normally unweighted and every class counts once: the middle school GPA calculator does exactly that. Some districts count high school courses taken in middle school, such as Algebra I, toward high school GPA, so ask your school counselor.
Key terms explained
- Unweighted GPA
- GPA using base letter-grade values only.
- Weighted GPA
