Class grade calculator: what is my grade right now?

Use this class grade calculator as a current grade calculator: enter only the work that has been graded and it shows your grade so far. It works as a grade calculator with percentages (type 92 for 92%) or with points (18 out of 20). Enter one row to use it as an assignment grade calculator, or every category to use it as an overall grade calculator for the whole course.

Course grade calculator: weights or points

Teachers grade a course in one of two ways. With category weights, each group of work (homework, quizzes, tests) is worth a set share of the grade, such as 20% or 30%, whatever the number of points in it. With total points, every point counts the same, and your grade is all the points you earned divided by all the points available. Your syllabus or online gradebook says which one your class uses. Pick the matching mode above.

Grade formulas

Weighted: grade = Σ (category score × category weight) ÷ Σ weights of graded categories

Points: grade = total points earned ÷ total points available × 100

Score needed on the rest = (target − points banked) ÷ remaining weight × 100

Example: category weights

Homework is worth 20% and you have 90% in it. Quizzes are worth 30% and you have 80%. That banks 90 × 0.20 + 80 × 0.30 = 42 points out of the 50% graded so far, an average of 84%. The other 50% is still to come. To finish the course with 90%, you need 96% on everything left.

Example: total points

A quiz is 18 out of 20 and a project is 42 out of 50. That is 60 out of 70 points, so the grade is 60 ÷ 70 × 100 = 85.71%. In a weighted class the same scores would give a different answer, because the project and the quiz would count by their category weights instead of their points.

Which calculator to use

  • Know your score in each category and its weight? Use category weights above, or the weighted grade calculator.
  • Have every assignment, including missing or ungraded work? The class grade calculator runs what-ifs.
  • Want to know what you need on the final exam? Use the final grade calculator.
  • Grading a test from the number of questions wrong? Use the easy grader on the homepage.

Grade calculator for college classes

College syllabi usually list category weights, such as exams 50%, homework 20% and a final exam 30%. Enter those weights and your scores, and the grade calculator works out your course grade the way most college gradebooks do. High school classes often add quarter and semester weights; the semester grade calculator handles those.

Grading calculator results vs your gradebook

Some teachers drop the lowest score, count missing work only after the due date, or round the final percentage. If your result is a little different from the school portal, check those rules in your syllabus.

Key terms explained

ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS

Grade calculator for students FAQs

How do I calculate my grade?+

If your class uses weights, multiply each category score by its weight and divide by the total weight graded so far: 90% homework at 20% and 80% quizzes at 30% give 84%. If it uses points, divide all points earned by all points available.

What if my category weights do not add up to 100%?+

Enter only the categories that have grades so far. The calculator divides by the weight you entered, so the result is your average on completed work, and the rest of the weight shows as still to come.

What score do I need to get an A?+

Set your target to the lowest percentage for an A in your class, often 90%. In weighted mode the result shows the average you need on the remaining work. If it is over 100%, the target is out of reach without extra credit.

Is a weighted grade the same as a points grade?+

No. The same scores can give different results. 18/20 and 42/50 is 85.71% by points, but if the quiz category were worth 50% and the project 50%, it would be 87%.
