What is an easy grader (EZ grader)?

An easy grader, also called an EZ grader, is a chart that shows the percentage and letter grade for every number of wrong answers on a test. Teachers used to buy it as a cardboard slide chart. This online version works the same way: set the number of questions and read the grade for each paper. It is free, needs no sign-up, and works for quizzes, tests and exams.

An online grader for a stack of tests

Set the number of questions once, then use the grading chart to look up each paper by its wrong-answer count. The free online easy grader shows both the percentage score and letter grade, with no signup required. Teachers can print the chart; students can check a test or quiz result. Use the points calculator instead when questions carry different marks. It works as a simple teacher grader: no account, no class roster, and nothing is sent to our server.

How to use the easy grader for a test or quiz

  • Enter the total number of equally weighted questions.
  • Choose correct answers or wrong answers, then enter the count.
  • Read the test percentage and the letter grade together.
  • Match the grade scale and passing threshold to your school policy.
  • Use the complete grading chart to mark more papers, or print it for your desk.
  • Teachers who used a paper EZ grader slide chart can use this the same way: set the number of questions, then read the grade for each number wrong.

Exam grade calculator for midterms and finals

Use it as an exam grade calculator for any multiple-choice or one-mark-per-question exam: set the number of questions, count the wrong answers and read the percentage and letter. As a teacher grade calculator it keeps the same settings for every paper, which makes it an easy grading calculator for a full class set. When questions carry different marks, the online grader calculator for points is the points grade calculator.

An example: 18 out of 20

18 correct answers out of 20 questions gives 18 ÷ 20 × 100 = 90%. With the default boundaries, that is an A. Changing your school’s boundaries can change the letter, but never the percentage.

Use your school’s grading scale

The default A–F scale uses 90, 80, 70 and 60 as minimum percentages. Schools can use different thresholds. Letter grades use the full unrounded percentage; displayed rounding does not change the grade.

Grading scales you can use

  • Standard A–F: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60. Most US schools use this.
  • Plus/minus: A+ 97, A 93, A− 90 and so on down to D− 60.
  • 7-point scale: A 93, B 85, C 77, D 70, used by some districts and colleges.
  • Lenient scale: A 85, B 75, C 65, D 55, used by some teachers for a hard test.
  • Custom: type any minimum for each letter in Grade scale, then save it for next time.

Grading charts for common test lengths

Below the calculator, the quick links open a full grading chart for 10, 12, 15, 16, 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50 questions. Each chart lists every score from all correct to all wrong, with the percentage and letter, and prints on one page.

A quick score calculator for tests and quizzes

It also works as a quiz grade calculator. This easy grader assumes every question has the same value and answers are counted as whole correct or wrong responses. For partial marks or questions worth different points, use the points grade calculator. For homework, quizzes and exams with different course weights, use the weighted grade calculator.

Before you record a grade

  • Check that correct answers plus wrong answers equal the total questions.
  • Use the exact percentage when comparing it with a grade boundary.
  • Do not mistake the displayed rounding for your institution’s rounding policy.
  • Confirm whether missing work counts as zero or is excluded.
  • Save only settings you want stored in this browser; review inputs before sharing a link.

Why a rounded score can still be below a boundary

For 26 correct answers out of 29, the percentage is 100 × 26 ÷ 29 = 89.655172…%. A whole-number display may show 90%, but the unrounded score is below an A boundary of 90%. This calculator assigns the letter and pass status from the unrounded value. Change a boundary only when your grading policy requires it; display precision does not change the underlying result.

Key terms explained

Percentage
Correct answers as a share of all questions, multiplied by 100.
Grade boundary
The minimum unrounded percentage for a letter.
Passing score
Your selected threshold for a passing result.

ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS

Easy grader online for teachers FAQs

What is an easy grader?+

An easy grader (EZ grader) is a grading chart that shows the percentage and letter grade for each number of wrong answers. Enter the number of questions above and the chart lists every possible score.

How many questions can you miss and still get an A?+

On the standard scale an A starts at 90%, so you can miss up to 10% of the questions, rounded down: 1 on a 10-question test, 2 on 20, 2 on 25, 5 on 50 and 10 on 100.

Can I use the easy grader if questions are worth different points?+

Not directly, because it assumes every question is worth the same. For tests where questions carry different points, add up the points earned and use the points grade calculator, or divide points earned by total points and multiply by 100.

How do I grade a whole class with the easy grader?+

Set the number of questions and your grading scale once, then open the full chart and read each student’s grade from the number they got wrong. Print the chart or save your settings so they are ready next time.

How do I turn test grades into a course grade?+

Average your test percentages if every test counts the same. If tests, quizzes and homework have different weights, enter each category and its weight in the weighted grade calculator.

Is this easy grader free?+

Yes. It is free, needs no account, and the numbers are calculated in your browser, so nothing you enter is sent to our server.

Can I change the grading scale?+

Yes. Open Grade scale to edit the minimum percentage for each letter, set a passing score, or choose the plus/minus preset. Boundaries must decrease from the highest letter to the lowest.

Can I print a grade chart?+

Choose Print chart to print the complete grading table. Browser print options also let you save it as a PDF.

What happens to my inputs?+

Calculations run in your browser. Use Save settings to keep the current settings on this device. Share copies a link containing your chosen grading inputs, so only share information you are comfortable putting in a URL.

Why does a rounded 90% sometimes show a B?+

Letter grades are assigned using the exact percentage. For example, 89.6% can display as 90% with whole-number rounding but remains below a 90% A boundary. Enable decimals to see more detail.

What is 15 out of 20 as a grade?+

15 ÷ 20 × 100 = 75%. That is a C on the standard 10-point scale and a C on the plus/minus scale. Set 20 questions and 5 wrong answers above to see it, with the full chart for every other score.

What is 17 out of 20 as a grade?+

17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%, a B on both the standard and plus/minus scales. On a 7-point scale, where B starts at 85%, it is also a B.

What is 12 out of 15 as a grade?+

12 ÷ 15 × 100 = 80%. That is a B on the standard scale and a B− on the plus/minus scale.

How do I calculate a test score percentage?+

Divide the correct answers by the total questions and multiply by 100. For example, 18 correct out of 20 is 18 ÷ 20 × 100 = 90%. The calculator shows this formula under every result.

Can I give half credit for a question?+

Yes. Turn on Half points under the calculator. Answers then move in steps of 0.5, so 17.5 out of 20 shows as 87.5%, and the grade chart lists every half-point score.
