What a 2/20 grade means
- 2 correct and 18 wrong on a 20-question test.
- Each question is worth 5%, so every wrong answer costs 5 percentage points.
- Any score from 0 to 11 out of 20 is an F.
- 10 more correct (12 out of 20, 60%) would make it a D.
- It is below a 60% passing score, which needs 12 out of 20: 10 more correct.
How to work it out
- Divide the score by the total: 2 ÷ 20 = 0.1.
- Multiply by 100: 0.1 × 100 = 10%.
- Find 10% on the grading scale: A is 90% and up, B 80%, C 70% and D 60%, so it is an F.

2/20 in France
In France, marks out of 20 are not read as percentages. On the French baccalauréat, an overall average of 2/20 does not pass (ajourné). By US percentage the same 2/20 is 10%, an F, so the two scales do not line up: a 16/20 bac average earns the top mention, while 80% is a B in the US.
| Bac average | Result |
|---|---|
| 16 or more | Mention très bienAbove 18 the jury may add its congratulations (since 2021). |
| 14 to under 16 | Mention bien |
| 12 to under 14 | Mention assez bien |
| 10 to under 12 | Admis (passed) |
| 8 to under 10 | Second group |
| Below 8 | Ajourné (not passed) |
These bands apply to the overall bac average, not to a single test, and mentions are only given to candidates who pass at the first group. Sources: Ministère de l’Éducation nationale, Le baccalauréat général (May 2026) and Eurydice, European Commission (December 2023).
