How much the EOC counts in Florida

In Florida, the statewide end-of-course (EOC) assessment makes up 30% of the final course grade in Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology 1 and U.S. History (section 1003.4282, Florida Statutes) and in middle school Civics (section 1003.4156). The law fixes the 30% but not the arithmetic. The Florida Department of Education says the algorithm for the 30% is a locally determined decision, so your district decides how an achievement level becomes a grade and how the result is rounded.

EOC grade formulas

Grade points: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0 (section 1003.437)

Course grade + EOC: final = course grade points × 0.70 + EOC points × 0.30

Two semesters + EOC: final = semester 1 × 0.35 + semester 2 × 0.35 + EOC × 0.30

District exam (Duval): final = (Q1 + Q2) ÷ 2 × 0.80 + exam points × 0.20

Example: a B in the course and a Level 3 on the EOC

This is the example in the Miami-Dade guide. A B is 3 grade points and Level 3 counts as a B, so the final grade is 3 × 0.70 + 3 × 0.30 = 3.00, a B. With Level 4 or 5 (an A) it would be 2.10 + 1.20 = 3.30, still a B. With Level 1 or 2 (a D) it would be 2.10 + 0.30 = 2.40, a C.

How levels and grade points become a letter

  • Florida law gives each letter its grade points (A 4, B 3, C 2, D 1, F 0) and percent range (A 90–100%, B 80–89%, C 70–79%, D 60–69%, F below 60%) in section 1003.437.
  • The Miami-Dade guide (October 2024) converts EOC levels this way: Level 5 or 4 is an A, Level 3 a B, and Level 2 or 1 a D. Level 1 is a D there, not an F.
  • Duval County’s student progression plan, as published by Stanton College Preparatory School, turns points back into letters at A 3.5–4.0, B 2.5–3.4, C 1.5–2.4, D 1.0–1.4 and F below 1.0. The calculator uses these cutoffs unless you pick the nearest letter.
  • FDOE suggests semester 1, semester 2 and the EOC at 35%, 35% and 30%, each on the 0–4 scale, but districts may use their own method.

Can the EOC raise or lower your grade?

Yes, in both directions. An A in the course with Level 1 or 2 drops to 3.10, a B. A failing course grade can be lifted: an F with Level 4 or 5 gives 1.20, a D, which passes. Level 3 gives 0.90, which is an F on Duval’s cutoffs but a D where anything from 0.5 points counts as a D. That gap is why it is worth checking your district’s own table.

Check your district’s rules

This calculator uses the 30% weight in Florida law, the grade points in section 1003.437 and, by default, the Miami-Dade level conversion and Duval’s points cutoffs. Your district may convert levels or round differently, and district final exams in other courses can count for a different share, such as 20% in Duval or 10% at Pasco High School. Change the conversion, the cutoffs or the weight in the calculator to match your student progression plan.

Key terms explained

EOC
End-of-course assessment: a statewide test at the end of a course such as Algebra 1 or Biology 1.
Achievement level
How the EOC result is reported, from Level 1 (lowest) to Level 5 (highest).
Grade points
The value of a letter grade: A 4, B 3, C 2, D 1 and F 0, as set by section 1003.437, Florida Statutes.
Student progression plan
Each Florida district's rule book for grades and promotion. It sets how EOC levels convert and how the final grade rounds.

ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS

EOC grade calculator FAQs

How much is the EOC worth in Florida?+

30% of your final course grade in Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology 1, U.S. History and middle school Civics. That share is set by Florida law (sections 1003.4282 and 1003.4156). The other 70% comes from your course grades.

What EOC level do I need to pass the class?+

With the 70/30 method, the Miami-Dade conversion and Duval’s cutoffs, a course grade of A, B, C or D passes with any EOC level. With an F in the course you need Level 4 or higher to reach a D. Your district’s conversion can change this, so set it in the calculator.

Do I have to pass the Algebra 1 EOC to graduate?+

Yes. Section 1003.4282 says a student must pass the statewide Algebra I EOC assessment, or earn a comparative score, to earn a standard high school diploma. That is separate from the 30% the EOC adds to your Algebra 1 course grade.

Can a bad EOC lower an A?+

It can. With 70/30, an A (4 points) and Level 1 or 2 (a D, 1 point) give 3.10, which is a B. To keep the A you need Level 3 or higher on the default conversion.

Does this work for EOC exams outside Florida?+

Yes. Choose Percentages, enter your course grade and EOC score, and set the EOC weight your state or school uses. We only list Florida’s rules on this page, because those are the ones we have checked against the law.
