What is an easy grader?

An easy grader (EZ grader) is a grading chart that turns the number of wrong answers on a test into a percentage and a letter grade. Teachers used to keep a cardboard slide chart on the desk. This free easy grader online works the same way: set the number of questions once, then read the grade for each paper from its wrong-answer count.

Easy grader formula

Percentage = (Total questions − Wrong answers) ÷ Total questions × 100

Each question is worth 100 ÷ Total questions percent

Worked example: 3 wrong on a 25-question test

Each question is worth 100 ÷ 25 = 4%. A student with 3 wrong answers has 22 correct, so the score is 22 ÷ 25 × 100 = 88%. That is a B on the standard 10-point scale and a B+ on the plus/minus scale. Every other score on the same test moves in steps of 4%, which is what the full chart in the calculator lists.

How to grade a stack of tests with the easy grader

  • Enter the number of questions on the test.
  • Choose whether you count correct or wrong answers.
  • Pick your grading scale: standard, plus/minus, 7-point, lenient or your own cutoffs.
  • Open the full chart and read each paper’s grade from its wrong-answer count.
  • Print the chart or copy the share link to use the same settings next time.

Grading scales you can use

  • Standard A–F: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60. Most US schools use this.
  • Plus/minus: A+ 97, A 93, A− 90 and so on down to D− 60.
  • 7-point scale: A 93, B 85, C 77, D 70, used by some districts and colleges.
  • Lenient scale: A 85, B 75, C 65, D 55, for a test that turned out harder than planned.
  • Custom: type any minimum for each letter.

Questions worth different points

The easy grader assumes every question is worth the same. For a test with, say, 20 one-point questions and two 10-point essays, add up the points and use the points grade calculator instead. For partial credit on a question, turn on half points.

Key terms explained

Percentage
Correct answers as a share of all questions, multiplied by 100.
Grade boundary
The minimum unrounded percentage for a letter.
Passing score
Your selected threshold for a passing result.

ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS

Free easy grader online for teachers FAQs

What is an easy grader?+

An easy grader (EZ grader) is a chart that shows the percentage and letter grade for each number of wrong answers on a test. Enter the number of questions above and the chart lists every possible score.

Is this easy grader free?+

Yes. The easy grader is free, needs no account and works on a phone, tablet or laptop. The numbers are calculated in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to our server.

How many questions can you miss and still get an A?+

On the standard scale an A starts at 90%, so you can miss up to 10% of the questions, rounded down: 1 on a 10-question test, 2 on 20, 2 on 25, 5 on 50 and 10 on 100.

How do I grade a whole class with the easy grader?+

Set the number of questions and your grading scale once, then open the full chart and read each student’s grade from the number they got wrong. Print the chart or copy the share link so your settings are ready next time.

Can I print an EZ grader chart?+

Yes. Use the print button under the calculator to print the chart for the test length you set, or download a ready-made PDF from the printable grade charts page.

Can I give half credit for a question?+

Yes. Turn on Half points under the calculator. Answers then move in steps of 0.5, so 17.5 out of 20 shows as 87.5%, and the chart lists every half-point score.

Can I change the grading scale?+

Yes. Open the grade scale settings to edit the minimum percentage for each letter, set a passing score, or choose the plus/minus, 7-point or lenient preset.

Why does a rounded 90% sometimes show a B?+

Letter grades use the exact percentage. 26 out of 29 is 89.66%, which can display as 90% with whole-number rounding but is still below a 90% A cutoff. Turn on decimals to see the exact score.

How do students work out a course grade?+

A single test grade is one part of a class grade. To combine tests, quizzes and homework by their weights, students can use the grade calculator on our homepage.
